A statment from our CEO:
The latest statistics show that 1,007 people in Scotland lost their lives to drug misuse in 2024. While this is a welcome 13% decrease from the 1,172 deaths in 2023, every single one represents a precious life cut short. Our heartfelt condolences go out to all those who have lost loved ones.
We acknowledge the progress that has been made since the Scottish Government launched its 5-year National Drugs Mission Fund in 2021. The downward trend in deaths is a sign that investment in vital services is making a difference.
However, Scotland’s drug death rate remains more than twice that of the rest of the UK and the highest in Europe. This stark reality highlights the need for continued and expanded investment. With the current Drugs Mission Fund due to end in 2027, it is crucial that the Government commits to a further 5 years of sustained funding, to build on the progress made and prevent lives from being lost.
At Street Connect, we are committed to saving lives, offering support to those struggling with addiction, and reducing the devastating impact of drug misuse on families and communities. We stand with all those across Scotland who are working tirelessly to tackle this crisis.
The fight is not over — but together, with compassion, determination, and long-term commitment, we believe a better future is possible.
