The latest drug death figures for Scotland in 2023 reveal a heartbreaking reality: 1,172 lives were lost due to drug misuse. This represents an increase of 121 deaths from the previous year and is a sobering reminder that the rate of drug misuse deaths remains alarmingly high. It is particularly distressing when we consider that the current figures are still much higher than those at the beginning of this series in 1996.

Firstly, our deepest condolences go out to all those who have lost a loved one to drug misuse in 2023. These 1,172 lives were precious, and our thoughts and prayers are with you during this incredibly difficult time. A 12% increase in deaths from 2022 is not just a statistic; it is a profound loss felt by families, friends, and communities across the country.
At Street Connect, we recognize the significant investment made through Scotland’s Drug Mission Fund and other funding initiatives. These efforts have led to some progress in recent years, and we commend the work that has been done. However, the increase in drug-related deaths highlights the urgent need for sustained and expanded funding. The current Drug Mission Fund is set to end in 2027, and it is crucial that the government commits to a new round of funding to ensure that the battle against drug misuse continues.
Scotland’s drug death rate is still more than twice that of the rest of the UK and remains the highest in Europe. This stark reality underscores the importance of continual investment to empower organizations like ours to keep fighting this war on drugs.
At Street Connect, we are fully committed to this cause. We will continue to do everything in our power to save lives, offer support to those struggling with addiction, and fight to reduce the devastating impact of drug misuse on individuals and communities. This is not just a fight for numbers; it is a fight for people—for their lives, their futures, and their families.
We stand with all those who are working to tackle this crisis and will continue to advocate for the resources needed to bring about meaningful change. The fight is far from over, but with determination, compassion, and ongoing support, we believe that a better future is possible.
